CLASSICAL DANCES OF INDIA

Classical dances of India: Indian classical dance or the word ‘Shastri Devesh’ is an umbrella term for many performing arts rooted in religious Hindu music and theater styles which are derived from Sanskrit text dance in their theory and practice.

Depending upon the source and the scholar, the number of known classical dances is more than eight. Eight classical dances of India have been listed by the Sangeet Natak Akademi — Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri, and Mohiniyattam.

In this list, scholars such as Dravid Williams include Chow, Yakshagana, and Bhagwat Mela. In addition, the Indian Ministry of Culture has included Chau in its scientific list.

These dances are traditionally regional, all with music and recitation in the local language or culture and they symbolize the unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes, and expressions. Currently, there are 9 classical dances officially in India.

Bharata Muni’s book Natya Shastra is the first well-known source to mention dance. There are a variety of dances in India, including classical dance and folk dance.

Only Eight classical dances are recognized by Sangeet Natak Academy (India National Academy). Ministry of Culture also considered Chhau Dance as a classical dance of India and make the list to Nine.

 The facts related to the Indian Classical Dances: 

  •  There are two basic aspects of Natya Shastra: 

  1. Lasya:   He refers to grace, bhava, rasa, and abhinaya. It symbolizes the feminine characteristics of dance as an art.
  2. Tandava: It represents the male elements of the dance and emphasizes more on rhythm and movement.
  •  There are three basic elements of Indian classical dances: 

  1. Nritta: Performance of the Dance is the abstract, sharp and rhythmic aspect of dance. The viewer is presented with pure movement, beauty in pace, form, tempo, range, and pattern. There is no detailed content in this concert, no description of the story.
  2. Nritya: Dance is a slow and expressive aspect of dance that seeks to communicate emotion and story with spiritual themes, especially in Hindu dance traditions. In a dance, dance-acting gestures enhance the silent expression of body movement fit for words and musical movement. The actor gave a myth or spiritual message. 
  3. Natyam: The Natyam is a play, usually a performance of a team, but can be performed by a soloist who uses certain uniform body movements to demonstrate a new figure in the story underneath. The elements of a Nritya include a Natya.
  •  Nine Rasa of Classical Dance: 

The Rasanubhuti is the ultimate aim of these dance forms. Natya Shastra speaks of Rasas. They are as following:
